GST calculator: add or remove GST
Work out CGST and SGST, or IGST, on any amount at the rates in force since 22 September 2025.
The rate a supply attracts comes from its HSN or SAC code — this shows what happens to the rate you pick, not which rate is right for your work.
Adding GST to a price
GST is the taxable value times the rate. At 18% on ₹10,000, that is ₹1,800, and the invoice total is ₹11,800. The taxable value is the price before tax — after any discount shown on the invoice.
Taking GST out of an inclusive price
When a price already includes GST, the value before tax is the price × 100 ÷ (100 + rate), and the GST is what is left. ₹11,800 including 18% GST is ₹10,000 plus ₹1,800 of tax. Taking 18% of ₹11,800 instead would give ₹2,124 — a mistake that overstates the tax.
CGST and SGST, or IGST
A supply inside your own state splits the rate in two: half central tax (CGST), half state tax (SGST) — 9% and 9% for 18%. A supply to another state carries the whole rate as integrated tax (IGST). The total is the same either way; what decides it is the place of supply, not the rate.
The GST rates since 22 September 2025
The GST Council folded the old 12% and 28% slabs into a simpler set, in force from 22 September 2025: 5% for essentials, 18% as the standard rate, and 40% for a short list of luxury and sin goods, besides nil-rated supplies. Special rates continue for a few goods, such as 3% on gold, silver and jewellery and 0.25% on rough precious stones.
Which rate applies to you
That comes from the HSN code of the goods or the SAC code of the service, and the rate notified against it — not from this page. This calculator does the arithmetic for the rate you choose; it is not tax advice.
Common questions
How much is 18% GST on ₹10,000?
₹1,800, so the total is ₹11,800. Within your own state that is CGST ₹900 and SGST ₹900; to another state it is IGST ₹1,800.
How do I remove GST from a price?
Divide the price by (100 + rate) and multiply by 100 to get the value before GST; the rest is the tax. For ₹5,900 including 18%: ₹5,900 × 100 ÷ 118 = ₹5,000, so the GST is ₹900.
Are 12% and 28% GST rates still used?
Not as slabs. From 22 September 2025 they were folded into 5%, 18% and 40%, so most goods and services that were at 12% or 28% now sit in one of those.
Why is CGST + SGST the same as IGST?
Because it is one rate, divided differently. Inside a state, central and state government each take half; across a state line, integrated tax carries the whole and the states settle between themselves.
