How the months are counted

Interest on TDS deposited late is 1.5% for every month or part of a month, from the day after the tax was deducted to the day it was deposited, in calendar months. TRACES's own example: ₹10,000 deducted on 10 June 2023 and deposited on 8 August 2023 is June, July and August — three months, ₹450. Had it been deducted on 30 June, June would not count, and it would be two.

Why counting from the anniversary is wrong

Counting a month from each date of deduction — 10 June to 10 July, and so on — gives two months for that example and understates the interest. The part month is the calendar month.

The fee for a late statement

A quarterly TDS statement filed after its due date costs ₹200 for each day of the delay, up to the amount of TDS it reports. It is separate from the interest.

What this does not cover

Interest for not deducting tax at all, penalties a tax officer may levy, and the government's own deductors are outside this. These are the law's figures, not advice; a CA should confirm anything that turns on them.
