What changed on 1 April 2026, and what did not
The Income-tax Act, 2025 replaced the 1961 Act from 1 April 2026. The forms and section numbers changed — the quarterly statement for payments to residents other than salary is now Form 140, which was Form 26Q, and the Act speaks of the tax year rather than the financial year. The due dates did not change.
Depositing what you deduct
Tax deducted in a month is paid to the government by the 7th of the following month. March is the exception: its deductions are due by 30 April. Paying late costs interest of 1.5% for each month or part of a month.
Filing the quarterly statement
Each quarter's statement is due on the last day of the month after the quarter — 31 July, 31 October and 31 January — except the last, which is due on 31 May. A late statement costs a fee of ₹200 a day, up to the amount of the TDS.
Certificates to the people you paid
Each payee is owed a certificate of the tax deducted from them — Form 131, which was Form 16A — within 15 days of the statement's due date, so that they can claim it against their own tax.
Who these dates are for
These are the dates for deductors other than government offices, whose deposit dates differ. They are the law's dates, not advice; a CA should confirm anything that turns on them.
